When you pedal the Spinweight, you push a gyroscopic rotor through cycles of precession. When the momentum ricochets, it changes directions 90 degress from where you'd think it should go. The ricochet sends the momentum onto a plane that is at a right angle to the last one. The rotation along that plane is where it's speed is multiplied by the drive ratio as it pushes the rotating mass to go faster with each cycle of rotation that you pedal.
The Spinweight is a mechanical torque converter that pushes torque into a gyroscopic rotor through a transmission between the handle and the case. It glides smoothly through 16 bearings and 3 clutches. There is a differential system of clutches that allows the user to push rotations in either direction of rotation while spinning the rotor in the same direction.The energy that this runs on is momentum. The momentum ricochets around inside like a speeding bullet and when you push on it the ricochet goes at another angle to steer itself around you. The handles don't rotate as your holding them but the body of the Spinweight ricochets around in between the handles turning the transmission to spin the mechanism inside to orbit faster.
